Since the girls came into first class they've been revising a new sound each day. We are now starting to meet some trickier sounds that the girls are less familiar with so we will slow down the pace a little and might spend a few days or even a week on some of the sounds that need extra work. Its really important that your daughter is not just meeting these sounds in isolation but is instead learning to recognise the sound in words both aurally and in her reading. When we meet a new sound we do a bit of brainstorming and think of lots of words that contain it, your daughter then chooses four or five of her favourite words to include in her Sound Book. We read these words with our partners but the girls will now also be reading those words for homework. They should be read out loud and you might like to have some fun by making up silly sentences with them orally. If you notice that your daughter is finding a particular sound tricky then it would be worth revisiting it every so often, in fact there is also a lot of value in popping back to any of the sounds sporadically to keep them fresh and to build her confidence. It would be really great to encourage your daughter to identify words containing these sounds in her environment, whether is on a magazine, chocolate bar wrapper or the side of a bus.
We are already on our second Sound Book and we use them every day, so please make sure to pop them back in their homework folder immediately after reading. After mid-term the girls will be bringing new readers home.
I believe many of the girls have been singing along with the Jolly Phonics videos at home and giving some great renditions.......... watch out X-Factor! Here are some more sounds we have been practising, your daughter might like to sing along.
